(Shreveport, LA)  – Four games into the season, a couple of things are apparent about this year’s edition of the Shreveport-Bossier Mavericks: they are very deep, and they are very good.

The Mavericks once again overmatched their opponents, the Jackson Showboats this time, placing eight players in double figures and resting two ABA Most Valuable Players in the fourth quarter of a 149-95 win at Hirsch Coliseum Sunday afternoon.

The win was the 64th consecutive victory and 69th straight home win for the Mavericks (4-0). Shreveport-Bossier is averaging 133 points per game through four contests, including 146.5 per game this weekend.

“We’re deep, man,” said 2009-10 ABA MVP Josh Pace, who led the Mavs with 21 points and five assists despite comfortably watching the fourth quarter from the bench. “That’s one thing you take away from a win like this. We go 14 or 15 guys deep, and most teams don’t even have that many players to pick from. It’s a good feeling to know somebody behind you can come in and there won’t be a dropoff.”

Pace did his biggest damage in the second quarter, when he hit six-of-eight shots for 12 points as the Mavs took an 84-40 lead.

Meanwhile, reigning ABA MVP and Shreveport-native Ed Horton was every bit as dominant in his three quarters of work, scoring 20 points to go with seven rebounds and suffocating defense.

“You just go out and do what you do best, because you know that everybody on this team expects that and is going to provide that themselves,” said Horton, who, along with Pace, are the only players in league history to win the MVP of the ABA and the National Championship Finals in the same season. “We all push each other to be the best.”

Also checking in with doubles in the victory were point guard Brandon Johnson with 14 points, guards Mike Crain and Tony Hooper with 13, and the trio of Brandon Davis, Chris Hagan and Monroe’s Kenneth Cooper with 12. Cooper added 12 rebounds to lead the team.

“It says a lot about your depth when you’ve got former MVPs and first-team All-ABA players coming off the bench because of the quality of our starting five,” said Shreveport-Bossier head coach Steve Tucker, referring to players like P.J. Couisnard, Tony Hooper and Alex Sanders. “With that kind of quality from top to bottom, we can wear teams out.

“We beat two pretty good teams pretty handily this weekend, and that was, in large part, due to the quality of the depth we have. I thought we played seven real good quarters out of eight yesterday and today. We’re about where I thought and hoped we’d be at this point, maybe a little ahead of that. Next week, I hope I can say that we’re about where I thought we’d be, maybe a little better.”

Jackson head coach Grant Worsley was realistic after his Showboats (1-1) became the latest victims of Shreveport-Bossier’s depth.

“We’re a young team, and we’ll get better as the year progresses,” said Worsley. “But a young team is not going to do too well against a team like the Mavericks. They can be scary at times how good they are.”

The Mavericks return to action with a pair of games next weekend. Shreveport-Bossier welcomes the Atlanta Aliens to Hirsch Memorial Coliseum Saturday, November 29, at 7 p.m., then hosts the Memphis Lions Sunday, November 30, at 4 p.m.
