(Shreveport, LA)  – The defending ABA National Champion Shreveport-Bossier Mavericks wrapped up their exhibition season in style Tuesday night as they walloped the South Houston Assault 122-96 at The Dock on the campus of LSU-Shreveport.

Four Mavericks scored in double figures, led by center Kenneth Cooper’s 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Cooper was once again active on the defensive end of the court and under the basket, and ignited the crowd at The Dock with a pair of thundering dunks late in the first half.

“The coaches tell me not to try to do to much, but my game is about hustle and defense,” said Cooper, who had 11 points Saturday as the Mavericks beat the BAFB All-Stars 70-38. “I was fortunate to get some good looks on the offensive end and score some points tonight, but defense and rebounding are where I build my game, and I felt like I did a pretty good job of that tonight.”

Joining Cooper in double figures were reigning ABA and Championship Finals Most Valuable Player Ed Horton with 15 points, point guard Anthony Jackson with 13 points, and point guard Chris Hagan with 10 points. Horton and Jackson were particularly effective in the third period when the Mavericks stretched out to a 42-point lead.

Center Chad Eichelberger fired in nine points and led the Mavericks with seven rebounds, four of which came on the offensive boards. Eichelberger had a key early blocked shot that sparked the Mavericks to a 27-point lead after the first period.

Swingman P.J. Couisnard joined Eichelberger with nine points, while guard Brandon Johnson led the Mavericks with five assists.

“I thought we looked a lot better tonight than we did Saturday at Barksdale,” said Mavericks assistant coach Albert Waldvogel, the acting head coach for Tuesday’s contest. “We got away from our normal rotation in the fourth quarter just to see if the guys could handle it stamina-wise. They responded well. I thought we played well on both ends of the court. We’re ready.”

Guards Devin Toliver and Kenny Taylor scored 18 points each to lead South Houston. No Assault player had more than two rebounds or assists.
