(Barksdale Air Force Base, LA)  – The Shreveport-Bossier Mavericks continued preparations for the 2014-15 season Saturday afternoon with a 70-38 exhibition victory over the Barksdale Air Force Base All-Stars before an enthusiastic crowd at the Sr. Airman Bryan R. Bell Fitness Center on Barksdale Air Force Base.

Shreveport-Bossier used a tenacious defensive effort and strong performances by guard Tony Hooper (12 points),  center Kenneth Cooper (11) and swingman Josh Pace (10) to overcome a gritty effort by the All-Stars team led by former USAF Academy star and NBA draft pick Anthony Hood. Hood led all scorers with 20 points.

“I love great defense, and I think we did a good job on that end of the floor today,” said assistant coach Sarah Gayler, who was acting head coach for the game. “This was our first game against another team this year after 14 or 15 practices and the scrimmage last week, so it was good to see how we would perform against opposing competition.”

Pace set the pace early on, scoring eight points in the first four minutes of the game to stake the Mavs to an 8-0 lead. The former ABA Most Valuable Player scored 10 of the Mavs’ 15 points in the first quarter.

“I wanted to get out and get us going strong,” said Pace. “I was feeling good out there, and my shots were falling right out of the gate.”

Cooper took over in the second quarter, playing relentless defense in the low post and accentuating that with timely scoring. He teamed with guard Currye Todd to put the clamps on Hood.

“I didn’t get off a single shot in the second quarter,” said Hood. “They did a great job of limiting my looks.”

Up just 27-20 at halftime, the Mavs exploded out of the locker room with an 11-0 run to take command of the game.  Cooper made a nice driving layup to get the rally started. Guard Brandon Johnson led the Mavs with seven of his nine total points in the third period as Shreveport-Bossier sprinted out to a 47-25 lead heading to the final quarter.

Hooper erased any chances for an All-Stars comeback, firing in nine of his team-leading 12 points in the fourth quarter as the Mavs stretched the lead to as much as 35. His 3-pointer to start the period was a back-breaker for the BAFB team. Cooper added five in the fourth while continuing his swarming defensive play.

The Mavericks open defense of their 2013-14 ABA National Championship next Saturday, November 8, when they take on the Colorado Kings at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum.
