Christmas came a bit early for the Shreveport-Bossier Mavericks when the American Basketball Association (ABA) upgraded the Louisiana powerhouse to second place in the mid-December Power Rankings.

Of the nearly 90 professional teams competing, only the top 32 teams are ranked. For the week of December 22, the rankings found the Jacksonville Giants, Shreveport-Bossier Mavericks and Chicago Steam holding on to the top three positions. The North Dallas Vandals, which had begun a slippery decline after holding onto the second place slot for several weeks, finished in fifth place leaving a space for the Richmond Elite at fourth.

The top four ABA teams will receive byes into the ABA Championships, which will be held in Shreveport/Bossier in April.

Undefeated and undeterred, the 6-0 Mavericks face off against the 21st ranked Mobile Bay Tornadoes this weekend.

Since taking the court for the season opener on November 9, the Mavericks have defeated the Denton Destroyers (137-66), Dallas Diesel (115-89), Monroe Magicians, (139-86), Texarkana Panthers (128-63) and New Orleans Cougars (117-102). A second match-up on the Panthers’ court over Thanksgiving weekend was postponed due to problems at the facility.

“This season’s victories spell almost certain defeat for the Tornadoes and the New Orleans Cougars over the next week,” said Mavericks head coach and general manager Steve Tucker.

The Mavericks have home court advantage against the Tornadoes beginning at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, December 28, in the historic Hirsch Coliseum. They face the Cougars at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, January 4, in New Orleans.
