With 20 points to his credit, guard Ed Horton led the charge in the Mavericks’ 135 to 87 victory over the Mobile Bay Tornadoes tonight at the Hirsch Coliseum.

It was a slow start for the Mavericks, who appeared to be weighed down by a bit too much Christmas. But with a little help from guard Trey Moore, they ended the first quarter 26 to 15.

The Mavs showed more spark in the second quarter, and with guard/forward P.J. Couisnard controlling the lane, they extended their lead 64 to 33. By the start of the second half, the Mavericks had fully regained their rhythm and dominated the court, once again proving that #2 slot in the American Basketball Association (ABA) Power Rankings.

Leading scorers for the Mavericks were Horton; point guard Chris Hagan with 19 points; point guard Tony Hooper with 18 points; Moore with 17 points; Couisnard with 16 points; power forward/center Alex Sanders with 14 points; and center Chad Eichelberger with 10 points.

The Tornadoes’ leading scorers were Erik Thrash with 24 points; Anthony Lundy with 18 points; Tim Amerson with 16 points; Maurice Irby with 11 points; and Anthony Sims with 11 points.

Going into their next game 12-0 for the season, and with a team record of 38 consecutive wins, 49 straight home wins, and a franchise record 101-7, the Mavericks hit the road to face off against the New Orleans Cougars on Saturday, January 4.
“It should be an exciting match-up,” said Mavericks’ head coach and general manager Steve Tucker.

“They last met in an intense season opener. The game ended with a Mavericks’ victory, but the score was a nerve-racking 117 to 102.”
