There were some anxious moments Saturday afternoon when the Shreveport-Bossier Mavericks faced off against archrivals North Dallas Vandals in the first game of a doubleheader at the Dr. Pepper Center in Frisco, Texas.

But the Mavericks, who were ranked #2 in the American Basketball Association (ABA) Power Rankings going into the game, made their point with a 125-112 win over the #5 ranked Vandals.

The knuckle-biting, edge-of-your-seat action continued from tip-off to the final play. With a slight 31-25 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Mavericks forged ahead with as much as a 10 point lead.

Rebounding, the Vandals fought their way to a 59-50 lead at the half – and extended that lead by 17 points at the 8:33 mark of the third quarter. But a full-court press and an aggressive zone defense and the Mavericks were in the lead 84-83 at the end of the third.

Once more in possession of the game, the Mavericks turned defensive pressure into a quick offense, stretching the lead to 15 points with two minutes to play.

The Mavericks are now 15-0 for the season, with 41 consecutive wins.

“This the longest winning streak in professional basketball history,” said Steve Tucker, the Mavericks’ head coach and general manager. “The Mavs hold a 103-7 record in the ABA.”

The Mavericks’ leading scorers in today’s game were guard Trey Moore, who scored 29 of his game high 33 points to lead the Mavericks to the comeback win; guard/forward P.J. Couisnard with 23 points; point guard Chris Hagan with 18 points; guard Ed Horton-17 points; and point guard Tony Hooper with 10 points.

The Vandals’ leading scorers were Brandon Johnson with 21 points; Eric Tisby with 19 points; Kenneth Cooper with 14 points; Trevin Parks with 14 points; Mohamed Fall with 12 points; and Jerel Hastings with 11 points.

The Mavericks next host the #12 Mobile Bay Tornadoes 7:30 p.m., Saturday, January 18, at the Bossier Parish Community College (BPCC). All proceeds from the game benefit the BPCC Athletic Department.
