(Owensboro, Ky) – On Saturday, January 9, your 4x-Champion Kentucky Mavericks took down the defending PBL Champion Rochester Razorbacks for a battle of the Champions at the Owensboro Sportscenter. This win was a monument for the Mavericks, extending their win streak to 93 and also making it 94 straight home wins.

The first quarter started exactly as expected for two teams of their caliber, going back and fourth for the first 6 minutes of the game until Anthony “The Jet” Jackson kicked it into another gear, pushing the fast break and hitting two three pointers and a pair of free throws.

PJ Couisnard, the Wichita State alumni defended last years PBL M.V.P. Troy Jackson for the extent of the first quarter. Jackson got all scoring for the game started with a couple layups in the first 2 minutes the Couisnard shut Jackson down. After a big stop on one end, Couisnard hit a three pointer to make the lead nine points eight minutes into the game. The starting two-guard Jereese Crouch hit a layup and the foul to complete the three point play to make the lead 24-18 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was about the same as the Mavericks kept their offense at a fast pace by tenacious team defense lead by first year Maverick Jerrell Lewis off the bench who came in and hit two jumpers, had three rebounds, two blocks and a steal to start the second quarter, the spark the Mavericks needed off the bench.

PJ Couisnard hit his second three five minutes in, capping an eight point run to push the lead to 13, the biggest of the first half before the Razorsharks made a run to make the halftime lead 50-41.

The Mavericks shot 17-37 from the field, and made 5-14 three pointers in the first half, but were outrebounded by one at halftime.

The third quarter was all about Alex “Big Ticket” Sanders. The Razorsharks couldn’t keep up with the fast pace the Mavericks wanted to play, so they slowed it way down by not crashing the offensive boards and focused on defense. Insert Big Ticket, the best offensive post weapon the Mavericks have. In just three minutes of play he made three baskets and made his only free throw. After making his last shot to give the Mavericks a comfortable fourteen point lead he ran the court and made a defensive stop the epitomized the Razorsharks chances of comeback. Couisnard and The Jet both hit another three pointer each.

The rough brand of defense the Mavericks brought baffled the Razorsharks all game. At the four minute mark of the third quarter, forward starter Josh Chichester got frustrated after what he thought was a foul and received a technical foul that Tony “Hoop” Hooper made. The Mavericks led after three quarters 76-62.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Mavericks and PJ Couisnard. It started even, both teams matching baskets when Couisnard caught fire and hit four three pointers in 5 minutes, giving the Mavericks their biggest lead of the game, a 103-80 lead. Couisnard ended with a game high 32 points, and the Mavericks won 108-88, to make the winning streaks to 93 straight games, and 94 at home.

The Mavericks play next in Grand Rapids Michigan, when they take on the Grand Rapids Cyclones on January 14, at 7 p.m.
