(Owensboro, Ky) – On November 21 and 22 of 2015, the Kentucky Mavericks hosted a Rookie and Free Agent Camp, hoping to finish filling out the roster.  About 40 men came to try out from all over the country and the coaches, Head Coach Steve Tucker and Assistant Coach Sarah Gayler, saw it as a great success.

After two days of tryouts and practices, the Kentucky Mavericks decided to take four players from the tryouts who they felt fit their system the best.  Jerrell Houston, Dwayne Lathan, Cordarius Johnson, and Matthew Karn will help try to the Mavericks win another title in the 2016 season.

Jerrell Houston is a 30 year old 6’ 7” forward/center from Memphis, Tennessee.  He signed at Mississippi State right out of high school but played for three. years at Tennessee State notching 65 games throughout his career.  He played 12 games in Germany where he started and then 18 games in Spain where he averaged 12.5 points per game.  His last two teams were the Clarksville Cavaliers in 2012 and the Jacksonville Giants 2014.

Dwayne Lathan is a 6’3” Guard from West Monroe, Louisiana who most recently played for the D-League team, Rio Grande Valley Vipers for the 2013-2014 season.  He played one year at Louisiana Tech where he averaged 8 points per game over his 30 games there.  He transferred for his final three years of NCAA eligibility to the Indiana State Seminoles where he averaged over 10 points per game, 5 rebounds per game, and 1.5 assists per game over his 82 game career.

Cordarius Johnson, out of Coushatta, Louisiana, played all four years of his college ball at Louisiana Tech. Johnson played in 133 games for the Bulldogs where he averaged 7.15 points per game over his entire career while shooting over 40% from the field.

At 6’3”, Matthew Karn is a local boy from Philpot, Kentucky, who played his college ball at the Nebraska University Cornhuskers.  Karn played in 18 games over three years at Nebraska at a guard position.

With all the hype going around the Owensboro area about the Kentucky Mavericks, we felt like the turnout of 40 guys was fantastic.  The competition was stiff and the selection was very difficult.  We cannot wait until next year’s tryouts to see what other prospects might show up to tryout.  We encourage all those who didn’t make the team to come back out to try to improve the 4-Time National, Kentucky Mavericks.

For more information on the try-outs, please contact our Head Assistant Coach, Sarah Gayler, at Sarah@mavup.com or call our office at (270)240-2705.  Visit our office at 817 West First Street, Owensboro, Kentucky.
