Wishes do come true. Just ask the Shreveport-Bossier City Mavericks who earned the coveted #1 slot in the American Basketball Association (ABA) Power Rankings earlier this week – and cinched a 112-93 win over the DFW Stars on Thursday night at the Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport.

The Mavericks are now 17-0 for the season, with 43 consecutive wins.
“With this victory, the Mavs are now 106-7, which sets yet another ABA record,” said Steve Tucker, the Mavericks’ president and head coach.

From tip-off through the final play, the Mavericks came out fast and played hard against the Stars. A first quarter surge led by power forward/center Alex Sanders, point guard Chris Hagan, and guard Currye Todd put the Mavericks in front 26-14 at the buzzer.

Solid performances by guard Ed Horton, guard Mike Crain, and point guard Tony Hooper in the second quarter allowed the Mavericks to maintain control and end the half 51-37.

A 3-point onslaught by Horton and Crain in the third quarter shot the Mavericks up by 25 points, and the fourth quarter found the Mavericks clearing the bench – and holding their line.

“The Mavs dished out 29 team assists, and the defense held the Stars to only 39 percent shooting for the game,” said Tucker. “Chris Hagan led the way with 7 assists, and Alex Sanders recorded a double/double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Leading scorers for the Mavericks were Horton with 22 points; Crain and center Chad Eichelberger with 14 points each; Sanders with 11 points; and Hagan with 11 points.
The Stars’ leading scorers were Ty Thomas with 34 points; J.R. Duffy with 18 points; Earl Rabb with 15 points; and Oscar Griffin with 10 points.

The Mavericks are on the road again this coming Saturday, Feb. 1, when they face off against the Mobile Bay Tornados.
