Mavericks/ABA Finals notes: Teams arrive in Shreveport for Finals; Promotional events highlight schedule

(Shreveport, LA.) – The American Basketball Association Finals tip off tomorrow (Tuesday, April 7) at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum, and the three teams joining the host and defending champion Shreveport-Bossier Mavericks in the tournament arrived in town Monday.

The second-seeded Jacksonville Giants and fourth-seeded Chicago Steam got to Shreveport in plenty of time to take in a few sights Monday, with both teams going through practice at the Mavericks Training Facility in the afternoon. The third-seeded Miami Midnites arrived later in the afternoon.

“We had a smooth flight in, and we’re ready to go for this special event,” said Andrew Wilson, marketing director for the Midnites.

The Finals tip off Tuesday at 6 p.m. Central Time, as Jacksonville faces Miami in game one. Shreveport-Bossier squares off against Chicago in game two with a start time of approximately 8 p.m CT.

***** The Mavericks will be hosting the official ABA Finals Press Conference Luncheon Tuesday, April 7, at noon at the Mavericks Training Facility (the MTF). Media members and sponsors that have not RSVP’d should do so as soon as possible to Kirk Copeland at 318/525-8853 or by email at Members and coaches from all four teams will be on hand to answer questions and share their thoughts on the ABA Finals.

***** The Mavericks are excited to present the SPAR Athletics 2015 ABA Championship Finals Fan Zone and 3-Point Contest. The Fan Zone will begin Tuesday, April 7, from 1-6 p.m. at the MTF (located across Pershing Blvd. from Hirsch Memorial Coliseum). Fans will enjoy free food, music and interactive activities. The 3-Point Contest has a $5 entry fee and will consist of four groups: Girls age 13-15, Girls age 16-19, Boys age 13-15 and Boys age 16-19. Contestants will shoot from the high-school regulation 3-point line, with winners of each group receiving $1000 each in scholarship money. The Fan Zone will run throughout the Finals. The 3-point Contest preliminaries will take place Tuesday and Wednesday (April 7-8) and the finals will be held Thursday, April 9 at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum.

***** Tuesday is “Education is Key” School Night at the ABA Finals. Students, teachers and parents are encouraged to wear their school’s colors to the games, and the school with the most students in attendance will receive a $500 donation from the Mavericks.

***** Wednesday is “Together We Are Better” Night, recognizing all the SB Mavs’ community partners and non-profit organizations. The group with the most in attendance will receive a $500 donation from the Mavericks.

***** The opening game of the Championship Series Saturday, April 11, will be Military and Veterans Appreciation Night. All active armed forces and veterans get free general admission with valid military ID. The Mavericks also encourage fans to wear pink Saturday night to support the fight against breast cancer.

***** Sunday’s Championship Series game will be “Show Your Colors” Night. Fans are encouraged to wear the colors of their favorite team.

***** All of the Mavericks’ Finals games will be broadcast locally on KRMD Sports Talk 100.7 FM (CBS Sports Radio), beginning with Tuesday’s contest with Chicago at approximately 8 p.m. CT.
