Victory was especially sweet for the Shreveport-Bossier City Mavericks Saturday night. With the 142-86 defeat over the Dallas Diesels, the Mavericks became the first team in the American Basketball Association (ABA) to win 20 consecutive games this season.

The Mavericks put on a stellar display before a record crowd, turning a close first half into an epic blowout in the second.

Defense was excellent tonight as they held the Diesel to 34% shooting for the game,” said Steve Tucker, Mavericks’ president and head coach. “The Mavs had 32 team assists and only 15 turnovers.”

Seven players scored in the double digits, including forward Rafael "The Manimal" Johnson, who recorded a double/double with 18 points and 14 rebounds; power forward/center Alex "The Ticket" Sanders, whose banner night included 16 points and five rebounds; and guard Currye Todd, who led the Mavericks with 20 points, which included five 3-pointers.

“Johnson and Sanders nearly blew the roof off Hirsch Coliseum when they combined for 10 dynamic dunks, and Todd was as dynamic on the outside as Johnson and Sanders were on the inside.” said Tucker.

The Mavericks’ other leading scorers were guards Trey Moore and Mike Crain with 17 points each; point guard Tony Hooper with 12 points; and guard Ed Horton with 10 points.

Leading the Diesels’ scoresheet were Tony Williams and James Hulvin with 20 points each; and Kevin Butler and Jeremy Carey with 8 points apiece.

“Tonight’s win means that the Mavs now have a record 46 consecutive all-time wins, and hold an ABA record with 109-7 over four seasons,” said Tucker.

The Mavericks host the Metroplex Lightning beginning at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 9, at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum.
