Thursday, December 18th

(Shreveport, LA.) – Shreveport-Bossier faced their biggest deficit of the season early in the game, but using their familiar formula of depth and hustle, the Mavericks wore down Texas down the stretch and beat the scrappy RimRockers, 130-88, Thursday night at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum.

The win gives the Mavericks a professional basketball record 70 straight victories and a 75-game home winning streak.

After baskets from Tay Merriwether and Tyler Jefferson with just over nine minutes to play in the first quarter, Texas (0-1) assumed a 6-3 lead. The RimRockers then clawed their way to a 23-23 tie late in the first quarter before Anthony Jackson’s buzzer-beater gave the Mavs (10-0) a lead they would never relinquish.

“They really battled us tonight,” said Mavericks head coach Steve Tucker. “They had great guard play, a lot like Memphis did earlier this season, and they fought us hard. We made some adjustments and our guys responded well to them. I think it’s good for us, though. We need challenges out there to achieve what we want to achieve this year. I’m very happy we won.”

Shreveport-Bossier got another huge night from reigning ABA Most Valuable Player and Shreveport native Ed Horton. The versatile guard from Southwood High School led all scorers with 25 points and ignited the Mavs with 10 points in the second quarter.

“It’s a great feeling playing on a team with so many great players, you don’t have to be ‘the guy’ game in, game out,” said Horton, who was 9-of-15 from the field. “I go out and do my job, and that’s what everybody else on this team does. Our depth is unquestioned, and it paid off for us again tonight.”

Jermaine Blackburn got off to a great start in the contest, scoring seven of his 11 points in the first quarter and seeming to be all over the court.

“I felt really good out there early,” said Blackburn, who hit 5-of-6 shots and added six rebounds and three assists. “The ball was finding me, and I just wanted to contribute. This is a great team and it’s somebody different every night. Coach asks a lot of us, and we do all we can to meet his expectations.”

In all, six Mavericks scored in double figures and two more had nine points in the win. Brandon Davis, who led the Mavs with 11 rebounds, and Chris Hagan, back after missing the Jacksonville game with a sore hamstring, each scored 15 points, with Hagan leading the team with four assists. Former ABA MVP Josh Pace scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth period as Shreveport-Bossier was running away from the exhausted RimRockers. Joining Blackburn with 11 points was Currye Todd, who got all of his points in the second quarter when he hit three big 3-pointers. Tony Hooper and Jon Rogers checked in with nine points and two steals apiece, with Rogers leading the team with two vicious blocked shots.

Next up for the Mavs is the Montgomery BlackHawks, who come to Shreveport for games on Saturday and Sunday at Hirsch Coliseum. Tip-off for Saturday’s contest is 7 p.m., with an afternoon game time of 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Saturday is KMSS-Fox33 Night at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum, with all general admission tickets free.
